February 17: Parity for Women in Prison

Kat Brady, justice activist who has been working on issues relating to female offenders for more than seven years. She is Coordinator of the Community Alliance on Prisons and working to pass a bill to provide a real gender-responsive environment for Hawaii's incarcerated women and girls.

Meda Chesney-Lind, Ph.D., is a nationally recognized professor in the Women's Studies Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is is the author of The Female Offender : Girls, Women and Crime, published in 1997, and the co-editor of Invisible Punishment: The Collateral Consequences of Mass Imprisonment.

Lorraine Robinson is Director of Ka Hale Ho`ala Hou No Na Wahine, a 36-bed work furlough program for women exiting prison.

Conditions in the Mainland prisons aren't under our control, either. Besides being far away, which is a bad idea in terms of rehabilitation and other considerations, there have been serious cases of mistreatment in (for example) the Utah prisons where the six Hawaii girls were sent.

We should all be concerned and stop this banishment of our own people to foreign lands. It's certainly more cruel and uncivilized than I thought we were in Hawaii.
